Background Check and Driver Partner Screening Criteria
In accordance with local law, Via conducts a background check on potential driver partners in the Washington, D.C. metro area (including Virginia) which includes a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) review, a criminal background check, and a search of sex offender registries.
Local laws mandate that a driver may not have been convicted of certain offenses in order to be allowed to drive on a TNC platform. In order to pass Via’s background check, each driver may not:
- Be a sex offender registry match in violation of, have a motor vehicle offense or criminal offense conviction in violation of, or otherwise violate any of the provisions of D.C. Official Code § 50–301.29b.
- Be a sex offender registry match in violation of, have a motor vehicle offense or criminal offense conviction in violation of, or otherwise violate any of the provisions of the Code of Virginia Title 46.2 § 2099.49.
In addition, Via’s standards for passing a background check meet and in certain instances exceed what is required under local law. In order to pass the background check, drivers must also:
- Have at least one year U.S. driver’s licensing history
- Be at least 21 years old
- Have a valid driver’s license in D.C., Virginia or Maryland.
The background check is private, secure, and completely free for potential driver partners. Background checks are performed by a third party background check provider that is accredited by the National Association of Professional Background Screeners. The background check does not include a credit check. Consistent with the law, we also periodically re-run background checks for Via driver partners.
Via also accepts only certain types of vehicles on its platform. The vehicles need to be newer than 2010 and must go through an annual safety inspection.
